Jill Cohran Art Exhibit
Jill Padgett Cohran currently lives in Georgia but hails from Jackson County, Florida, and much of the Florida Panhandle is reflected in her art. Speaking of her experiences growing up here, Jill says:
"All I have to do is close my eyes and I am a young girl again on our family farm picking cotton, fishing, feeding livestock, playing in the rain, and weeding the garden. Marianna, Florida was a great place to grow up. Work and play both hold good memories. Living so far from town made it difficult to visit friends, so I often found myself walking down the dirt road to my grandparents' house. My grandmother was a master gardener. Her flower beds were full of a wide variety of vibrant, fragrant flowers. I would help her weed them and then she would take me inside and give me a cold "co-coler", as she put it. Inside she most often had a quilt on a loom hanging from the ceiling. She made her quilts mostly from patterned flour and feed sacks. I think this is where I got my love of color.
When I was 15 my parents gave me an art set...drawing pad, set of charcoals, and a book. In the 11th grade I entered an art contest sponsored by The Ladies' Auxilary Club and, to my surprise, my charcoal drawing of a palm took first place. That got me going and I've never stopped. In 1971, I moved to Atlanta where I still reside. In between being a mom and managing a business, I always found time for my creative side. I have been commissioned to paint props for plays, murals for schools, furniture, clothing, metal, and gourds. My favorite medium is watercolor, but I also enjoy working with acrylic and mixed media on canvas. My love for the ocean and tropics is often reflected in my art. However, I do enjoy venturing beyond and trying my hand at a variety of themes. When I'm not painting you can find me reading or gardening. I hope you enjoy viewing my art. Most of it is available for purchase. It is all original, no copies. If you find something you like, but it has been sold, I can usually closely replicate it, but there will be variances as no two pieces come out exactly the same." Enjoy and thank you.
